EUR Damage per tonne: Update of the marginal damage cost per tonne values included in the EEA briefing: "The costs to health and the environment from industrial air pollution in Europe – 2024 update" available here. The work was done with the support of the European Topic Centre Health and Environment (ETC HE).

Emissions are multiplied by the latest marginal cost (MAC) per tonne calculated by the European Topic Centre on Human Health and the Environment (ETC HE) for the EEA.

Damage to health caused by the so called main pollutant is calculated using the value of a life year (VOLY): an estimate of damage costs based on the potential years of life lost (YOLL) which takes into account the age at which deaths occur (higher weighting for younger people).

This is then divided by the GVA from the economic group "Industry except construction" as described in Eurostat (see data sources above).

The indicator represent the kg per billion EUR GVA due to releases of heavy metals in water (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury and Nickel)

The value is calculated as the sum of all pollutants listed under "Description", weighted by their human toxicity using human toxicity characterisation factors from USEtox (see data sources above). This weighted sum is then divided by industry's GVA in the EU-27.
